Boston Globe: Ad Watch

BOSTON GLOBE AD WATCH: Middlesex County District Attorney hopeful David Solet is leaning on a familiar name in his latest digital push — and a familiar critique of his incumbent opponent, Marian Ryan.

Solet’s campaign is out Monday with a new digital ad that features former prosecutor Lisa McGovern, who left the DA’s office not long after Ryan took over more than a decade ago, publicly criticizing the office’s leadership under her as “harsh” and “demeaning” toward employees on her way out.

In the ad, McGovern calls Solet “smart, hard-working, attentive, personable, and above all, ethical,” ticking through a full-throated endorsement of her former colleague.

“We need the leader of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office to be someone who has the skills, the knowledge, and the know-how for what’s happening now, not what was happening decades and decades ago,” she says in the nearly 90-second spot.

Solet and McGovern previously worked together under Ryan. Solet, a Cambridge resident, resigned in September to launch his bid after 24 years in the office, where he most recently led the Cold Case Homicide Unit.

He’s not the first challenger to Ryan whom McGovern has backed; she similarly supported Michael Sullivan, a former Cambridge city councilor who ran against Ryan in 2014.
